Report on Household Electronics Recycled in Illinois

The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act was passed in September 2008 to reduce the amount of household e-waste going to the Illinois landfills.  In the bill they define Covered Electronic Devices (CEDs) and Eligible Electronic Devices (EEDs) as outlined below.

NOTE:  All of the above items are not allowed in any Millennium Waste container.

In the 2015 Electronic Recycling Report to the Governor and the General Assembly it details what products made up the 69.9 million pounds collected in 2014 by Registered Collectors.  As outlined in the table below, televisions made up the largest portion.

Where to Recycle Electronics in Illinois

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has outlined the resources below on where to recycle your electronic waste:

Drop-off at an Electronic Waste Collection Site:

Check the IEPA’s list of registered e-waste collection sites (sorted by city) to find a collection site nearest you. Make sure to call ahead to verify the collection site does, in fact, accept your particular type or brand of equipment. A fee may be applied if the collection site is not affiliated with a manufacturer’s acceptance program.

Use a Manufacturer’s Take Back Program:

Find manufacturers, their electronic equipment brands covered by law, their electronic waste acceptance program websites and toll free numbers on the list of registered electronic equipment manufacturers.

 More Details

The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act requires manufacturers of covered electronic devices (CEDs) to recycle electronics produced from an Illinois household,  and they are required to register, pay a registration fee and meet recycling goals each year.  According to the 2015 Electronic Recycling Report, 97% of manufacturers met or exceeded the recycling goals.

The registered manufacturers who recycled the most pounds in 2014 were:

Pounds

7,374,300           Best Buy

4,809,400           Hewlett Packard/Apollo/ColorSpan/Compaq
