Holiday Recycling | Reducing Waste this Holiday Season

The holiday season can be a busy time of year. With so much to do around the house and the colder temperatures tempting you to snuggle up near a cozy fire, staying motivated about normal household routines such as recycling can be difficult.

The holidays should be a time to gather together with a room full of laughter and entertainment, but by keeping a few simple tips fresh in the back of your mind, you will find it easy to stay on top of your recycling habits and while still enjoying the good company of friends and family during the holiday season.

Here are a few helpful tips to keep your recycling habits on track at home and at your workplace this winter and all holiday season long:

At home:

- Consider wrapping your gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper instead of buying new wrapping paper. Newspaper and brown craft paper also make great wrapping material!

 – Sending Christmas cards this year? If your Christmas card list seems to keep growing, consider purchasing cards that are made from recycled content or sending e-cards to friends and family members, you reduce the amount of paper you use while also saving money on postage!

 – The holidays are a busy time for batteries; in fact 40% of battery sales occur during the holidays. Consider switching to rechargeable batteries this holiday season as well as purchasing or gifting an appropriate battery charger.

 – With the rapid increase in shopping during the holiday season, retail and grocers will go through hundreds of thousands of plastic and paper bags in only a few short months. You can help reduce the amount of these bags being used by bringing reusable bags from home when you venture out to do your holiday shopping.

 – Turn off the lights when you leave a room at home and consider automatic timers for your indoor and outdoor holiday lights. Avoid using your holiday lights during the day, this will save you money on your energy bill and extend the life of your holiday lights.

At work:

- Visit with your boss and coworkers about switching to recycled paper and consider placing a receptacle next to the printer to collect misprinted pages for recycling or use as scratch paper.

 – If you have large documents that need printing, consider two-sided printing if your printer is capable and you will use 50% less paper!

- Rather than provide disposable cups and plates for the office coffee maker and break room, encourage staff to use reusable cups and dishes to reduce waste and natural resource use.

- Turn off all of the office lights and power down computers and other electronics after everyone has left for the evening. Office buildings and businesses are some of the largest consumers of electricity and energy, simply powering down your facility at night can save hundreds to thousands of dollars per year on energy costs
