What does asbestos waste disposal have to do with home or building renovation you ask? Depending on the age of the structure that you are renovating, it is possible that you may encounter asbestos during your remodeling project.

Asbestos belongs to a family of naturally occurring minerals distinguished by their long, thin fibrous composition. Well known for its strength, insulation, and fire resistant properties, asbestos was commonly used in building and construction projects through the 1900’s. During this time asbestos was easy to obtain and was extremely cost-effective, which lead to its use in many common building products including plaster, drywall compound, floor tiles, ceiling coatings, and more.

When handled or disturbed, microscopic asbestos particles can easily become airborne and pose a great risk to human health. When inhaled, asbestos particles become trapped inside the lungs where overtime they can accumulate and eventually lead to serious of health problems within the lungs.

Asbestos exposure can occur in the workplace, your local community, or at home. Although its use in building and construction materials has greatly declined in the last twenty years, asbestos can still be concern in structures built as late as 1990’s.

Depending on the age of the structure you plan to renovate, here are few areas where asbestos may be present:

  • Insulation - Insulation around water pipes may cause asbestos. Asbestos is not likely to be released unless a pipe is damaged or needs repaired.
  • Flooring materialsAsbestos was commonly used in flooring materials and adhesives. Flooring materials such as vinyl tiles, rubber tiles, or asphalt may contain asbestos.
  • Ceiling tiles and coatings -Commercial grade ceiling tiles as well as acoustic or “popcorn” ceilings often contained asbestos through much of the 1900’s.
  • Drywall and Joint Compound - Asbestos was a common component of many types of plasters, joint compounds, and wall texture coatings.
