Cardboard Recycling | Millennium Waste
In a world that is continually working towards becoming more green and efficient with its resources, recycling has played a crucial role in helping to realize these goals. Rather than tossing away materials, a valuable resource can be produced by recycling, which in turn, creates a sustainable environment for future generations.
One of the fastest growing recycling trends is cardboard recycling. As consumers we have become accustomed to receiving our goods in boxes. Whether purchasing shoes, cereal, or a new television, it is nearly impossible to go shopping and not return home with a handful of boxed products. Even with technological changes and a shift in consumers becoming more dependent upon online shopping, the problem will still exist and perhaps become more prevalent once you take into consideration that approximately 90% of all products shipped in the US arrive in cardboard packaging.
Cardboard recycling has long been a popular practice for commercial businesses and is becoming increasingly popular in residential communities as well thanks to convenient recycling drop-off locations and single-stream curbside recycling options. With 400 million tons of paper and cardboard products being produced each year, cardboard recycling is a critical step towards helping to reduce the waste stream.
Cardboard recycling is a very efficient process. Recycling cardboard consumes approximately 25% less energy than producing new cardboard from raw materials and substantially reduces the emission of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In addition to the energy savings, recycling one ton of cardboard can also save over 700 gallons of water and 46 gallons of oil that would have been consumed during the process of producing new cardboard.
At Millennium Waste, we understand the importance of recycling and work hard to offer a range of commercial recycling and residential recycling options for our customers. For our commercial recycling customers, we offer cardboard recycling dumpsters and cardboard compactors in a range of sizes to accommodate your business’s recycling needs. For our residential recycling customers in Aledo, IL we offer our single-stream curbside recycling program for convenient recycling without the hassle of sorting and separating.
Cardboard recycling is an important practice that we can all benefit from. For every ton of cardboard that is recycled, nine cubic yards of landfill space is saved, but it is important to remember that not all cardboard is recyclable. Most corrugated and flat cardboard can be recycled without any problems; however waxed cardboard (usually found in supermarkets) cannot be recycled. Prior to recycling your cardboard it is important to make sure that the cardboard is dry and free from food scraps and oil, if that pizza box you are recycling if full of melted cheese and grease, remove the soiled portion and recycle the rest!
