Contaminated Soil Disposal | Quad Cities Landfill

Soil contamination is a global problem that is of great concern in many regions of the world. Soil contamination can stem from many different sources including industrial and agricultural practices, mining, and the improper disposal of contaminated waste. Contaminated soils are considered to be a pollutant and if not handled and disposed of properly, this polluted soil can have severe effects on human health and the surrounding ecosystem.

The most common soil contaminants include petroleum waste and byproducts, pesticides, fertilizers, solvents, and heavy metals. Some of these chemicals do not break down easily and over time can leach into the surrounding area. The only way to prevent these contaminants from spreading into the food production stream or underground aquifers is through proper excavation and disposal.

If you have identified an area that you believe contains contaminated soil, initial testing may be required to identify the type and degree of contamination present. Depending on the size of the contaminated site and the accessibility of the soil bed, contaminated soil can usually be excavated using traditional heavy equipment. Once the contaminated soil has been removed it must either be cleaned and treated before re-filling the excavated area or transported to an approved contaminated soil disposal site.

The excavation and disposal of contaminated soil can be hazardous and should only be completed by trained professionals qualified to perform this type of work. Prior to performing the excavation and removal of the contaminated soil it also important to check with local and federal agencies for current regulations regarding the handling and disposal of contaminated soil in your area.
