Eco-Friendly Lawn Care | Be Green with Your Grass

With summer in full swing and plenty of fun and exciting things keeping you busy, it is easy to lose sight of everyday chores while you enjoy the dog days of summer. While it is nice to enjoy the pleasant weather when it is available, one chore that is important to maintain throughout the summer is proper yard care and maintenance.

Keeping up with your yard work will help ensure a healthy lawn going into fall and can also save you time and money throughout the year. There are many things that you can do help you keep your yard green all summer long while also being green at the same time. Here are few eco-friendly lawn care tips to help you keep your yard in great shape this season!

Tip #1
Choose the right grass! If you are getting ready to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn, do some research to find out which type or blend of seed is best suited for your zone. While some grass types work well in variety of regions, some areas such as the dry western plains will see better results with regional or native varieties such as Buffalograss.

Tip #2
Adhering to fertilizer schedule throughout the season can improve the health and efficiency of your lawn while also preparing your grass for the cooler months ahead, but be mindful of the fertilizer that you choose for yard. Many commercial fertilizers contain high levels of synthetic chemicals and herbicides that can pose potential health hazards to pets and small children as well as the environment. When choosing a fertilizer for your yard, look for an organic option whenever possible or create your own fertilizer by composting at home!

Tip #3
Save water! Yes, water is necessary in order to maintain a lush and plush lawn, but by watering smart you can actually reduce the amount of water you use this season. It is best to water your lawn early in the morning when it is cooler; this will allow the water to absorb into the ground before the midday sun has a chance to evaporate it. Use more water less frequently, a deep watering twice a week is more effective than lightly watering 3-4 times a week. If you are interested in reducing your water bill even more, consider using rain barrels during spring to collect rainwater that can be reused in your yard!

Tip #4
Mow often. Keeping your lawn a little higher, especially during extreme periods of heat, will keep your grass healthy and prevent the soil from drying out. Mowing more frequently will also reduce the shock and stress that your lawn incurs from infrequent, deep cuts. If you live within town or on a smaller lot, consider a rotary mower for this job, you will burn calories without burning fuel!

Tip #5
Mulch it! If you follow step #4 and mow often, there should not be a need to deal with those pesky yard bags and excess grass clippings. Leaving a light layer of grass clippings on your yard will provide protection and nutrients for your lawn in between mowing.

By following these tips and paying a little extra attention to your lawn this summer, you will be on your way to a great looking yard for seasons to come.
