Go Green | Millennium Waste

Eco-friendly is seen everywhere today. Everything we do today can affect our environment as well as our health. By embracing a greener lifestyle we are improving our quality of life and helping our environment. Millennium Waste makes it easy for you to participate in the green experience with their recycling options. It is easy to become overwhelmed, but it is also easy to make a difference. With these 10 steps, you can be on the path to becoming green in no time!

  1. Change a light bulb- Simply changing a standard incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb is a great way to go green. It saves energy and money because it converts the energy into light rather than heat. They also consume about 75% less electricity and last 10 times longer. If you replace one 75-watt incandescent bulb with a 25-watt CFL you could save up to $83 over the life of the bulb.
  2. Unplug lights and electronics- Anything that has an LED (light emitting diode) that glows even after you turn it off continues to draw power. Your TV, computer, and cell phone charger can drain power. When you leave a room, unplug easily accessible cords and switch your power strips to off, and by doing this simple step you could save up to $200 a year.
  3. Recycle Electronics- Americans have tossed 5.5 billion pounds of electronics including TVs, stereos, cell phones, and computers. It is easier to recycle these items than to toss them out, just give Millennium Waste and Recycling or your local waste service provider to find an acceptable drop off location. If 1 million people recycled these items we would keep 4 million pounds of lead off the ground.
  4. Audit your Energy- It’s easier to save energy when you know exactly where you are using it. Investing in a home audit takes a couple of hours, but pays off with a list of things you can do to curb consumption. On average an energy audit can save up to 30 percent on utility bills.
  5. Reuse a Water bottle- Stop buying plastic disposable water bottles and invest in a reusable, preferably recycled, water bottle. By doing this you will not only help the environment, but you will also be saving money. Thousands of disposable water bottles find their way into landfills each year and you can help do your part by making this simple change.
  6. Support Local Farmers- Typical grocery produce travels nearly 2,000 miles before it ends up on your plate. Buying from local farmers means that you are getting fresh ingredients, supporting local green initiatives, and reducing transportation costs.
  7. Look for the label- When replacing a household item choose a product that has an Energy Star label. Energy Star labels guarantee that the products are energy-efficient. A household with Energy Star products use 30 percent less energy than the average household, which can be a savings around $600 a year.
  8. Do full loads- When doing laundry it is best to do a full load. You waste water and money when you do not have a full load of laundry. The average American washes around 500 loads of laundry a year, which consumes 21,000 gallons of water. If you wash fewer loads of laundry and fewer loads of dishes, you could save up to 4,500 gallons of water a year.
  9. Reuse paper- Print on two sides of paper or let your kids color on the back side of paper. By doing this you are saving paper waste and being green. Even the simplest things like recycling your paper can make a big difference.
  10. Donate- Take your unwanted items to thrift shops in your area. By doing this you are recycling, or repurposing perfectly good items. You will also be helping the economy and save money. When you are there shop around too, you may find something that you like.
