Living Green | Millennium Waste

Living green and practicing sustainable living habits at home can be a very rewarding experience. Green living practices are great for the environment, your community, your checkbook, and even your health, and you might be surprised at how easy it is to work towards a greener lifestyle!

There are many simple steps that you can take around your home to begin living a more sustainable & green lifestyle. In addition to helping you cutback and conserve valuable energy and resources around your home, these tips may also help you cut some of your energy and living costs as well!

Tip #1: Conserve Water
While it is easy to take the luxury of running water for granted, many people may not understand the lengthy & energy exhaustive process that water must go through before it is suitable for use and consumption. Simple steps such as switching to low-flow showerheads and faucets can reduce your water usage in the bathroom by more than 50%. Another great tip is to try and take shorter showers. By simply reducing your shower time by 2 minutes per day, you can reduce water usage by more than 20% per week.

Tip #2: Lighten Up
Remembering to shut off lights and electronics when you leave a room is a great way to prevent unnecessary energy waste around your home, but there are also some things that you can do to conserve energy while the lights in your home are on! By switching out the traditional incandescent light bulbs in your home with energy efficient CFL’s, halogen incandescent bulbs, or LED light bulbs can reduce the amount of energy used to light your home by 25-80%, and energy efficient bulbs have a substantially longer lifespan saving you energy and money in the long run. Now that’s a “bright” idea!

Tip #3: Clean Out the Cleaning Cupboard
Store purchased cleaning agents can have many adverse effects on the environment and can be extremely harmful to children and pets if ingested. While it is becoming easier to find environmentally friendly cleaning products at the store, you can save some time and money by making your own green cleaning supplies at home! Common household products such as olive oil, white vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean, polish, disinfect, and remove stains around you home!

Tip #4: Recycle
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to enjoy a greener lifestyle is practicing responsible recycling around your home. Recycling everyday materials such as aluminum cans, plastic, and paper products will help prevent unnecessary items from entering the waste stream while also conserving energy and resources spent on the production of these goods from raw materials. Many communities now offer single-stream residential recycling programs, which means you do not even have to sort your recyclable materials!

These are just a few tips that will help get you on the path to a green, sustainable lifestyle at home. At Millennium Waste, we believe in responsible waste management, recycling, and the conservation of energy and natural resources.
