Trade, don’t toss those clothes! How to host a clothing swap party

With the spring season comes the spring cleaning. Many people are clearing out closets, cleaning garages and de-cluttering from their winter hibernation. While this clean out is a great time to host a rummage sale, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to get your friends together and host a clothing swap!

Clothing swaps are a fun way to spend time with friend and revamp your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Chances are, your friends want to shake up their look a little too! You don’t have to limit the swap to adult clothes, have friends bring kids clothes or toys too! Here are some tips on how to host a successful clothing swap.

1)Decide what you want to swap. Is your party a girl’s night out type party? Or can they bring kids clothes and house hold items too?
2) Start making a list of who you want to attend. How many people do you want to invite? Think of people you know with different shapes and sizes. You want there to be something for everyone.  Don’t forget to include accessories too!
3). Come up with a date that works for most people.  If possible have it at the end of a season when people tend to clean out their closets.
4) Pick a place to have your clothes swap.  You could have it in a church, someone’s house, or a club that someone belongs to.  The possibilities are endless.
5) Come up with the rules for your party. How many items will they need to bring? How will they trade?  What kind of clothes and accessories will you accept?
6) Plan your set up.  Do you want things folded neatly on tables?  Do you want them hung up on a clothes rack? Do you want them categorized by size? How do you want the accessories displayed?

After you have nailed down the details, have your friends bring their items to the party location. Organize the items by category, shirts, blouses, skirts, pants, accessories, etc... After you have the items separated by category, you can further organize by color and size. If you can get a clothing rack to hang item up on. Card tables are also good for folding items and jewelry for display. Having your area organized like a store, not only helps keep things in order but also gives your party that real shopping feel. Have each guest bring a snack or bottle of wine to share so you can sip and shop!
You might also want to set up a little changing room area or have a bathroom or bedroom available for your guests to try things on. Have a full length mirror ready so they can see their new outfit! Provide your guests will bags so they can take their treasures home.
After the party, gather the remaining items and donate them to good will or hold a rummage sale and split the profits with your friends. Either way, you end up with new clothes and more room in your closet without wasting a thing!
